Introduction to Posed Newborn Photography

Capturing the tender and delicate essence of a newborn through photography is an art form that requires not only skill but also the right equipment. When it comes to posed newborn sessions, the choice of gear can significantly impact the outcome of the photographs. In this article, we will delve into the essential equipment needed to create stunning and memorable images of newborns by going over what equipment we use to photograph posed newborn sessions.

Essential Cameras for Newborn Photography

Choosing the Right Camera Body

The cornerstone of newborn photography lies in the camera. Opting for a DSLR or mirrorless camera with high resolution and excellent low-light capabilities is vital. Brands like Nikon and Canon offer exceptional options, such as the Nikon D850 or the Canon EOS R5, ideal for capturing intricate details and nuances.

We at Rhys McArthur Photography the key element of equipment we use to photograph posed newborn sessions is the Canon 5D Mark IV as our primary camera and a Mark III as a backup.  These are great work horse cameras that provide beautiful warm images.

Lens Selection for Newborn Sessions

Pairing the camera body with the right lens is crucial for achieving desired results. We prefer prime lenses to zoom lenses for their better sharpness. Our primary lens for Newborn sessions is a Canon EF 35 mm f/1.4L II USM.  We also use a Canon 100 mm f/2.8L macro lens for those beautiful detail images of lips, eyes and toes.

Lighting Equipment for Capturing Newborns

Natural Light Techniques

Harnessing natural light is often preferred in lifestyle newborn photography. Positioning the baby near a window or using soft diffused light can create a warm and natural ambiance, enhancing the ethereal quality of the images. However, we prefer the control of artificial light for our Newborn images.

Artificial Lighting Options

Investing in softbox lights or continuous LED lighting can provide consistent and adjustable illumination without harsh shadows. Our preference is a 65″ to 85″ translucent (shoot through) parabolic umbrella.  We find that this produces soft shadows ideal for Newborn images.

Wireless light system is a must in our eyes both for safety as well as convenience. We currently utilize the Flashpoint 600Pro TTL system for all sessions.  Light intensity is easily adjusted for Newborn photos and can be increased for outdoor images.  The recycle time is also incredible to have the ability to continuously take images with almost no lag time.

Props and Backdrops

Incorporating props and selecting suitable backdrops can add charm and personality to the images. Soft blankets, wraps, baskets, and thematic props contribute to creating visually appealing compositions.

Most backdrops we use are sourced from Intuition Backgrounds as well as Baby Dream Backdrops.  We want to make sure that our backdrops are high quality to help with editing.

Flokati rugs and furs can add a soft cozy touch to the images.

We also use a myriad of props, both vintage and new, such as bowls, tiny beds and crates. Additional touches like textured layers, knit wraps, florals etc. are also a must to create unique and stylized images that are unique to each client.

Our favorite vendors are:

Luneberry

Rozzi Rayne
